How to Verify an Electrician's License in Alabama & Tennessee

Both Alabama and Tennessee license the people who do electrical work — and both make it easy to check a license for free. Five minutes of verification is the strongest filter against unqualified work. Here's how it works in each state.

Alabama: the Electrical Contractors Board

Alabama licenses electrical contractors and journeyman electricians through the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board (AECB). Go to aecb.alabama.gov and use the license search to look up the person or company by name or license number. Confirm the license type (electrical contractor for the business taking your job), that the status is current, and the expiration date.

Tennessee: the Board for Licensing Contractors

In Tennessee, electrical work is regulated through the Department of Commerce & Insurance. Use the state's license verification portal at verify.tn.gov to look up the contractor. Larger projects require a licensed contractor with an electrical classification; smaller electrical jobs may be done by a registered limited licensed electrician (LLE). Check that the credential matches the size of your project and that it hasn't expired.

Don't stop at the license

  • Insurance: ask for a current certificate of liability insurance — the license search won't show it.
  • Permits: panel changes, new circuits and service upgrades typically require an electrical permit and inspection. A licensed pro pulls the permit; treat "no permit needed" on a big job as a warning sign.
  • Written estimate: get the scope and price in writing before work starts.
